A surfer has died after being pulled from the water at Byron Bay on the NSW North Coast.

Police say that at about 2.10pm on Thursday emergency services were called to Wategos Beach following reports an unconscious man had been pulled from the ocean by three surfers.

An off-duty paramedic, together with local police, commenced CPR on the man before NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived.

Despite their efforts the 57-year-old Byron Bay man died at the scene.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
