Surfer, 60, dies after being mauled by 10-foot shark in Australia

A 60-year-old surfer has died after being attacked by a shark off the Australian coast.

The three-metre shark mauled the man's leg while he was surfing at Salt Beach near Kingscliff, New South Wales at around 10am Sunday morning, Sky News reports.

Several fellow surfers came to the victim's aid and two men brought him back to the beach after fighting off the massive creature.

He was given first aid on his left leg, but died of his wounds at around 10.40am, a spokesman for Surf Live Saving NSW told Guardian Australia.

Paramedic Terry Savage said the man's injuries were "significant" but that the efforts of the two men who tried to help him were "amazing".

"Unfortunately there was nothing else we could do," he told ABC.

"It was nothing short of heroic to get him to the beach," he added.

Although great whites are found in the area, the breed of the shark is not known.

However, according to the NSW Department of Primary Industries, a bull shark was detected off the coast of Kingscliff on Friday evening.

New South Wales police are still trying to formally identify the man, from Tugun in Queensland, and to contact his family.

The horrific attack led to swimmers and surfers being asked to leave nearby beaches, which will be closed for the rest of the day.

The attack is thought to be the third fatal shark attack in Australia this year.

It comes after a diver was killed near Esperance, Western Australia in January.

In April, a 23-year-old wildlife worker was attacked on the Great Barrier Reef.
