Surendran terms CPI(M) ‘anti-Indian, anti-national’

Rubbishing the Communist Party of India (Marxist)'s political resolution calling for understanding with other democratic forces against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the party's State unit president K. Surendran has said that the BJP is glad that it is being opposed by an "anti-Indian, anti-national" party like the CPI(M).

He said that CPI(M)'s base had eroded across the country with its national leaders following the diktats of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

"The CPI(M) has reduced itself to a regional party such as the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). Mr. Vijayan now takes the national-level decisions, just like Panakkad Thangal does for the IUML. CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury is forced to toe the line dictated by Mr. Vijayan regarding SilverLine because the Kerala unit of the party now bears the expenses of the national leadership. The CPI(M) base among the youth, students and trade unions across States has now eroded," said Mr. Surendran.

He said the CPI(M) did not have any clarity in its political or economic positions. Its positions on private capital and foreign investments have now proved to be impractical, as they are no longer following these in Kerala.

"There will not be any positive or creative outcome from this party congress. It shows the hollowness of ideas of Communist parties. The common people of India do not understand the language of the communists. They have only a handful of members in Parliament," he said.

Mr. Surendran accused the Congress leadership in the State of creating a needless furore over Congress leader K.V. Thomas attending a seminar at the CPI(M) party congress to hide the party's relationship with the CPI(M) at the national level.

"Nothing will be gained in any State through an alliance between the CPI(M) and the Congress. It is an impractical and unnatural alliance. Both these parties are clutching at the last straws. Prof. Thomas is someone who is irrelevant in Kerala politics currently. His participation in the party congress seminar would not have created any flutter, if not for the over-reaction of KPCC president K. Sudhakaran and Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan. At the same time, the Congress and the CPI(M) leaders are sharing stages at the national level," he said.
