Surayud steps in as acting head

Former prime minister and privy councillor Gen Surayud Chulanont has been appointed acting president of the Privy Council, replacing the late Gen Prem Tinsulanonda.

The appointment was published in the Royal Gazette yesterday.

Gen Surayud, 75, the former army chief and former supreme commander, served as the 24th prime minister from Oct 1, 2006 to Jan 29 2008 following the Sept 19, 2006 military coup led by former army chief Gen Sonthi Boonyaratglin.

Gen Surayud is also a close aide of the late Gen Prem, who passed away on Sunday and who had asked Gen Surayud to act on his behalf as he was suffering increasing ill health.

Gen Surayud is also chairman of the Ratthaburut Foundation, founded by Gen Prem.
