SURAT: When once high-end drugs were hard to get and costly as these were mostly imported, production of synthetic drugs locally, designed to suit specific types of needs like fitness enthusiasts, students or partygoers, have made the city’s drug-laden underbelly a lot murkier.
Investigators as well as those working at de-addiction centres claim this to be a dangerous trend and are worried that the designer forms are the most sought-after now among synthetic drugs. “The synthetic drug forms are easy to consume and have various uses. Fitness activity, party, study or to feel isolated,” Vinay Solanki, president of Parivartan Vyasan Mukti Kendra, Surat.
The two main categories methamphetamine and mephedrone are now manufactured by pharmacy graduates. In the recent past two manufacturing units of synthetic drugs were busted in Vapi by the Narcotics Control Bureau, while one manufacturing unit was unearthed in Surat district by the city police.
The investigators were surprised to know when the drug manufacturer claimed that they increase the particular chemical depending upon its requirement. “The synthetic drugs are fast becoming popular among teenagers due to its designer forms. Same type of drug with different quantities of its ingredients are liked by the teenagers,” said an NCB official.
“There are different types of drugs provided as per the users demand. The suppliers know their regular customers and they give the drugs accordingly,” said a 24-year-old businessman who is under de-addiction treatment for MD abuse.
