Surat: Drugs sold without prescription, medical store owner arrested

SURAT: The special operations group sleuths arrested a medical store owner on Wednesday for allegedly selling restricted drugs (tablets and syrups) without prescription. The accused Lalaram Chaudhary (23) was selling antidepressants and painkillers over the counter without the prescription of a doctor.

Police kept watch at the Shiv Shakti Medical store for a few days and sent many dummy buyers. After confirmation that the accused was selling prescription medicines over the counter, police raided the store.

“As part of the drive against drugs, we are keeping watch on medical stores selling addictive medicines without prescriptions. Many young boys are getting addicted to these medicines,” said a police officer.

“Along with addiction, it was found during investigation that criminals consume these medicines before committing serious offences,” the officer added.

A SOG team raided the shop with a team of officers from the food and drug department. From the shop, police seized 407 tablets and capsules and 17 bottles of syrup. The accused charged Rs 10 for each tablet.

“On consuming these medicines, a person feels high. Initially taken for enjoyment, these tablets or syrup become an addiction,” said a police officer.
