Suranne Jones back on medication after dad's death as she opens up on anxiety battle

Actress Suranne Jones has revealed she is taking medication following her breakdown and the loss of both her parents.

The 43-year-old star, who is best known for her role in Doctor Foster, opened up about her treatment for anxiety - which she has battled for years - and shared that she wants to end the taboo around it.

Suranne sadly lost her dad in January after he battled Covid, while her mum died five years ago.

"I'm on medication and, at some point, I'll aim to get off that," she told Fearne Cotton's Happy Place podcast.

The actress continued: "I think there's a huge taboo around it and I wasn't going to say it but I decided last night I should because it's important I think."

Ex-Corrie star Suranne explained she was put on medication after her mum's death as she became too unwell.

At the time, her husband Laurence Akers was unable to help, which later resulted in Suranne having a breakdown backstage of a theatre show in 2018.

Things started to get better for Suranne as she starred in BBC's Gentleman Jack and she was then able to come off her medication.

But earlier this year, she went back on them following the death of her dad.

Speaking about her anxiety, Suranne explained she suffers in social situations and ends up sweating, as well as talking in a posh voice.

Describing a scenario, Suranne told Fearne: "The sweat started and the voice came out. I was like, 'Oh God, stop doing that!'"

In recent weeks, Suranne, who is set to star in Channel 4's I Am Victoria, says her new role as a “perfect” wife battling inner demons makes her realise how vital it is to care for your mental health.

She revealed keeping your mind fit and healthy is as important as “going to the gym” is for the body.

"Looking after your mental health is everything. It’s like going to the gym, it’s about looking after yourself, recognising changes before what happened to me during Frozen, and what happens to Victoria," Suranne told.

"I am fortunate to have been in therapy a very long time, but now and again the pressure builds up.

"I had a moment filming of Gentleman Jack when I needed to time off and see a doctor, to really deal with demons in my life."
