Supreme Court Upholds Sanctions Against Trump Allies

Donald Trump Organization trial in New York State Supreme Court in New York

The Supreme Court has declined to hear an appeal from lawyers associated with former President Donald Trump, including Sidney Powell, regarding $150,000 in sanctions imposed on them for filing a baseless lawsuit challenging the 2020 election results in Michigan. The lawsuit, filed on behalf of six Republican voters, contested Joe Biden's 154,000-vote victory over Trump in the state.

Seven lawyers, including L. Lin Wood, were sanctioned for abusing the court system with the sham lawsuit. Wood claimed he had a minimal role in the case, offering his services as a seasoned litigator to Powell. The sanctions, originally set at $175,000, were reduced by a federal appeals court to around $150,000, owed to the state and Detroit for their legal expenses.

In a separate legal matter, Powell recently pleaded guilty to six misdemeanors in Georgia related to her attempts to overturn Trump's loss in the state. These charges accused her of conspiring to interfere with the election process intentionally. Powell gained notoriety in November 2020 for vowing to 'release the Kraken,' a reference to a mythical sea monster, in connection with her plans to challenge the election results.
