Supreme Court stays Ranveer Allahbadia’s arrest, but slams YouTuber for ‘depraved’ comments

The Supreme Court on Tuesday stayed the arrest of Ranveer Allahabadia, more popularly known as Beer Biceps, in the cases registered against the YouTuber for allegedly making vulgar and obscene comments on Samay Raina’s show India’s Got Latent, Bar and Bench reported.

On February 14, Allahbadia had moved the apex court to club multiple first information reports lodged against him in various parts of the country and sought interim protection.

Granting interim protection against arrest in all cases, Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh directed Allahbadia to cooperate with the investigating agencies. The court also ordered for no further FIR to be registered against Allahbadia for his remarks made in the episode in question.

The court, however, restrained him and his associates from airing any YouTube show for the time being.

Court slams Allahbadia’s controversial comments

Criticising Allahbadia’s remark on India’s Got Latent, the court also said: “The words you have chosen, parents will feel ashamed. Daughters and sisters will feel ashamed. The entire society will be ashamed. These are the levels of depravity you and your henchmen have gone to.”

According to Bar and Bench, hearing Allahbadia’s petition, Justice Surya Kant remarked: “Such behaviour has to be condemned. Just because you are popular you cannot take the society for granted. Is there anyone on earth who will like this language. There is something very dirt in his mind which has been vomitted…”

FIRs had been filed against Allahbadia and others by the Guwahati police, Jaipur police and the Maharashtra cybecrime department last week following a joke made by the former about parents and sex on Samay Raina’s show.

The Mumbai police had told the media on February 15 that Allahbadia remained untraced as his house was found locked and his phone was switched off. He had reportedly failed to appear before the police on February 13 at the Khar police station following which he was summoned again by the police.

After coming under fire for the controversial remarks, Allahbadia had issued a public apology and all episodes of the show in question were taken down from Samay Raina’s YouTube channel.

Read this report on how Maharashtra police acted swiftly against Allahbadia and Raina for their "obscene" remarks, even as they allegedly dragged their feet on cases of hate crime and incidents of hate speeches.
