Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg broke three ribs in a fall Wednesday at her office and is recovering in the hospital.
The court released a statement Thursday morning saying that the 85-year-old jurist went to George Washington University Hospital in Washington after experiencing discomfort overnight.
Ginsburg was admitted to the hospital for treatment and observation after tests revealed the fractured ribs.
Ginsburg broke two ribs in a fall in 2012. She has had two prior bouts with cancer and had a stent implanted to open a blocked artery in 2014.
President Donald Trump is expected to visit the Supreme Court Thursday morning for Justice Brett Kavanaugh's official welcoming ceremony.
Kavanaugh, who took his place on the nation's highest court last month after a contentious confirmation process, will skip a nearly 45-year tradition and not walk down the Court's marble front steps alongside the chief justice. In another break from the past, the ceremony won't be broadcast live.
The court said the decision was made due to security concerns linked to Kavanaugh's confirmation.
Kavanaugh was confirmed by a 50-to-48 vote in the Senate following heated hearings centered on accusations of sexual misconduct while he was in high school and college, which he denied.
