Supreme Court justice recounts moment her son found her bulletproof vest

  • Supreme Court Justices Elena Kagan and Amy Coney Barrett are testifying before Congress , requesting millions in additional funding to enhance security for the judiciary amidst a significant increase in threats.
  • Justice Kagan highlighted that threats against the Supreme Court surged following the leak of the draft opinion that overturned Roe v. Wade, and these threats have continued to escalate since then.
  • Justice Barrett recounted a personal story, stating, “When threats to my life were particularly intense a few years ago, around the time of the Dobbs leak, my security detail sent me home with a bulletproof vest and I carried it into my house. ... I turned around and my 12-year-old son was standing in the doorway of my bedroom and he wanted to know what it was and why I had it.”
  • She continued, “I didn’t expect that performing this service was going put me in the position of explaining to my children what a bulletproof vest was, and why I had to war one.”
  • This congressional testimony marks a rare appearance by Supreme Court justices, being the first time they have testified before Congress since 2019, underscoring the gravity of their security concerns.
