The Co-operative Food and the National Union of Students (NUS) have set to work to support apprentices by offering 10% discount on groceries at 2,800 stores across the UK.

The NUS Apprentice extra card has been developed specifically for apprentices by NUS extra as part of its commitment to provide increased support and services for the growing number of post-16 work based learners.

Freda Cronk, head of marketing communications, said: “Apprentices are facing increasing financial pressure as they juggle work, training and studies. As a community-retailer, we are committed to providing great value, conveniently. We are pleased that our work with NUS can support apprentices at a key time in their life, as they develop the skills that will serve them well in the future.”

Raechel Mattey, spokesperson for NUS Apprentice extra, said: “Apprentices do not always have access to the student benefits typically offered to people in higher education, and so the Apprentice extra card helps to address that.”

Operated by the NUS, NUS Apprentice extra cards are the only discount cards available to apprentices and cost £11 for a full 12 months. There are over 100 discounts available, and the money raised from the sale of the card funds The National Society of Apprentices, to represent the needs and welfare of apprentices, and vocational learners.

From 9 to 13 March 2015, National Apprenticeship Week celebrates apprenticeships and the positive impact they have on individuals, businesses and the wider economy.

The current National Intermediate Apprentice of the Year, Lois McClure from Wigan, is a membership services assistant at The Co-operative. The 21 year-old is vice chair of The Co-operative’s inaugural Young Members’ Board and, was introduced to Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal in recognition of her fundraising feats which contributed to The Co-operative presenting more than £6m to Carers Trust last year.
