Supporters urge Premier League rethink over TV plan that negatively impacts Everton fans

The Football Supporters Association has again urged the Premier League to allow every game to be broadcast while fans are not allowed into matches.

Whilst the resumption of last season after the coronavirus shutdown saw every single Premier League game shown on TV due to matches taking place behind closed doors, that is currently not set to be the case at the start of the 2020/21 season.

Whilst every one of Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea’s matches in September will be shown on TV, Newcastle United and Burnley will not be shown live on TV at all.

It means there is no legal way for UK-based fans of Newcastle and Burnley to watch their teams in action this month, despite overseas supporters likely able to watch games.

Everton fans will also be affected by the plans.

The Toffees' opening-weekend trip to Spurs will be shown on TV, as will their next game - a home match against West Brom.

Yet Everton's trip to Crystal Palace has not been selected for broadcast, meaning there is no way for fans to watch the game in the UK.

That is despite the FA lifting the 3pm Saturday blackout, which would allow matches to be shown at a time when they are traditionally unable to be aired.

Ahead of a Premier League meeting on Thursday, the FSA has been critical of the decision not to show every game.

Thomas Concannon from the Newcastle United Supporters Trust said: “It’s frightening, the lack of consideration given to Newcastle fans.

“We won’t be able to watch our team at all - legally - whereas other fans can watch their teams again.”

Overall, there are 11 Premier League fixtures in September that will not be able to be viewed legally by fans.

Southampton, West Ham, Crystal Palace, Wolves and Sheffield United supporters will also be shut out of watching their team live in two fixtures in September.
