Supporters gather at farmhouse at centre of eviction row in Strokestown, Co Roscommon

A large group gathered at a property in Co Roscommon opposing the repossession of a farmhouse.

Around 50 people are at the premises in Falsk, Strokestown which is at the centre of an ongoing legal row.

The property was the scene of a controversial eviction last December.

Anthony McGann, in his 50s, and his brother David and sister Geraldine, both in their 60s, had been in the home for three generations.

In October a High Court judgement ordered that the family must vacate the home by November 12.

Mr Justice Senan Allen found that the McGanns were trespassers on the property, and ordered that they must leave by noon today.

And now a group supporting the family has arrived at the farmhouse, vowing to stay "for the long haul".

Garie Beattie of the National Land League of Ireland told Shannonside FM: "I'm here for the long haul and I'm assuming most other people are here for the long haul too.

"And if we are breaking the law then I'm sure something will transpire out of that, but none of us believe we are.

"We're standing here in solidarity with an Irish family who we believe were treated appallingly."

In a statement to RTE, KBC bank said: "The repossession of a family home is always a last resort and comes after a long period of time when all avenues have been exhausted, from a financial and legal perspective".

They added that the bank makes "every effort to find a solution", and concluded that "this is a legal matter, the execution of a court order and to reflect our respect of same".
