A Palestinian flag has flown over a city landmark with dedicated supporters standing in solidarity to mark Palestine's national day.

With a fragile ceasefire in place between Israel and Hamas, dozens have gathered in Melbourne to show support for the Palestinian people and condemn ongoing suffering in the wake of the war in Gaza, which has claimed tens of thousands of lives.

Wintry conditions lashed the group as they listened to speeches and participated in dances and cooking classes at Federation Square on Saturday afternoon.

A Palestinian flag was raised above the landmark by men in security guard vests, while people in the crowd waved flags of their own.

Independent senator Lidia Thorpe addressed dozens from the lectern ahead of what was billed as an afternoon and evening of performances and music.

Pro-Palestine supporters previously marched through the heart of Melbourne each Saturday.

However, regular rallies ended in mid-October following the Gaza ceasefire.

Some 1200 people were killed and 250 taken hostage from Israel during a cross-border attack by the designated terror group Hamas on October 7, 2023.

More than 65,000 people have been killed in Gaza since Israel's counterattack, according to Gazan health authorities.

This includes more than 20,000 children in Gaza, according to Save the Children.
