Supporters' calls for Chris Hughton to be given Bristol City job grow after defeat at Swansea City

Bristol City supporters were unanimous in their message to the club’s board after defeat to Swansea City: Get Chris Hughton.

The light finally went out on the Robins’ faint play-off hopes on Saturday, succumbing to a 1-0 defeat at the Liberty Stadium.

It was a familiar tale for Robins fans watching at home. City, with caretaker manager Dean Holden in charge, enjoyed their fair share of handsome play in possession without the cutting edge required to get a result.

Connor Roberts reacted fastest for the Swans to opening the scoring after the ball ricocheted off the post in first-half stoppage time, and Famara Diedhiou’s second-half penalty miss summed up the game, which confirmed City will end in mid-table when the season concludes on Wednesday evening with the visit of Preston North End.

At full time, many City fans took to social media to call on the club hierarchy to swiftly move for former Newcastle and Brighton and Hove Albion boss Hughton.

The 61-year-old is among the favourites for the job with the bookmakers, and the consensus favourite with the fanbase to be to be Lee Johnson’s successor.

A Bristol Live poll found more 59 per cent of City fans believe Hughton is the right man for the job.

Defeat in South Wales intensified those calls with the Robins’ season over bar the shouting, though the City board intend to take their time over making an appointment.

How City fans reacted to the result

Rob Dunn: It was rubbish, rubbish that became desperate last 20mins. Need a proper manager in ASAP, as won't be much of a pre-season. Sort it out City.

Kevin Seager: Poor, shots on target all game 1, same story all season.

Christopher James Yeend: Name Chris Hughton

David Lemon: It encapsulated 3 seasons from January onwards, plenty of possession but absolutely little or no creativity. One shot on target, a weak daisy cutter from 35 yards. Poor, poor, poor.

Christian CM: It’s been like this all season
