'Support has been incredible': Family plea for privacy after 42yo woman's alleged murder by her husband

The family of a Rockhampton nurse who was allegedly murdered by her estranged husband have said they are focused on caring for her three children.

Karen Gilliland, 42, died at her home on Tuesday night with wounds to her neck and stomach.

Nigel Gilliland, 45, is in custody charged with her murder.

In their only public statement in the wake of her death, Ms Gilliland's relatives on Friday said they were grateful for an outpouring of community support, but have appealed for privacy.

Her mother Cheryl said: "The three kids are with us now and they are our only focus and priority."

She said family wished to thank "first responders, the ambulance and police [and] the neighbours on the night who helped the kids in the night."

She also thanked "the Rockhampton community as a whole for their support", adding "the police support has been incredible".

Detective Acting Inspector Luke Peachey said it was "obviously a very difficult and hard decision for the family to come here today".

"It's been a traumatic week for the family," he said.

He asked for the "community and the media to respect their privacy and give them an opportunity to grieve their daughter".

Mr Gilliland is due to appear again in Rockhampton Magistrates Court in August.
