A new opinion has shown support for independence has fallen in recent months.
The Panelbase snapshot indicates that, once ‘don’t knows’ are excluded, 48% of people would back independence.
It also shows 35% believe indyref2 should be held within the next two to five years.
The Scottish and UK Governments are at loggerheads over whether another referendum should take place.
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has said a vote should occur before the end of the 2023, while Tory Cabinet Minister Michael Gove all but dismissed a referendum before the next general election.
Although discussion of indyref2 is more muted than it was during the Holyrood election, primarily because of the focus on the pandemic, the constitution is expected to come back as an issue.
The poll, carried out for the Sunday Times, put support for independence at 48%, down four points since April.
Backing for the Union stands at 52%, again once ‘don’t knows’ are excluded.
However, the responses on the timing another referendum are more positive for the pro-Yes side.
While only 19% say a referendum should be held in the next 12 months, the figure is 35% for the next two to five years. The biggest chunk, 46%, said there should not be a referendum in the next few years.
Polling guru Sir John Curtice said the headline figures indicated a “cooling of the independence ardour” since the Holyrood election.
A Scottish Conservative spokesperson said: "This poll confirms last month's election result that only the Scottish Conservatives can build Scotland's real alternative to the SNP."
