Support for Scottish independence rises in new poll

Support for independence has increased to 54 per cent, according to a new poll suggesting a growing trend among Scots.

The poll showed a 54-46 vote when people who haven't made up their mind are removed from the findings.

The survey by Panelbase also shows more Labour voters are willing to back Scottish independence. Support among Labour voters increased from 35 per cent to 37 per cent based on the previous results.

Scottish Labour leader Richard Leonard hardened the party’s pro-union stance earlier this month. He said there is "no appetite" for a separate state.

The last four polls by Panelbase have suggested an increase for independence among all voters each time.

At 54 per cent, the level is back to the same point as it was immediately after the Brexit vote in 2016.

When the seven per cent of "don't knows" are included in the latest results, it still suggests 50 per cent support independence.

SNP depute leader Keith Brown said: "This is no longer a trend - majority support for independence is now the established position."

Brown added: "When the Covid crisis has been contained and we have returned to some degree of normality, the people of Scotland will be given the chance to make their votes count in Indyref2."
