Support floods in for homeless in Glasgow after anger at pic of hundreds queuing for food in snow

Over £62,000 has been raised for vulnerable Scots after a photo of a soup kitchen queue went viral.

We told how appalling images surfaced of struggling Glaswegian's queued in treacherous snowy conditions for a hot meal on social media.

Scots branded Monday's scenes amid Storm Darcy 'shocking and humiliating'.

An online fundraiser was set up in the wake of the heartbreaking footage for the Kindness Homeless Street Team, who run the soup kitchen in Glasgow's George Square.

The total is currently sitting at over £62,000 reports Glasgow Live.

Volunteers at the charity, based in the east end, provide food, clothing, toiletries and support for those sleeping rough or struggling financially.

As well as running a soup kitchen four evenings a week from George Square and giving out food parcels from a donation centre on London Road, they also provide furniture to help people move off the streets into stable accommodation.

Around 25 volunteers worked on Monday to feed hundreds of people in need of help and served up 100 sausage suppers donated by restaurants across the city.

We told how organiser Laura McSorley has seen an increase in the number of people using the service since the coronavirus pandemic.

She said: "Our numbers at the beginning of the pandemic I would say were roughly between 70 and 80 people and on average, and then we have probably had between 130 to 150 present since.

"We had people that had been in nice financial comfort.

"They had their own business, their own house.

"We've actually had people that came to us and said they had they've had their furniture out their house because they'd lost their house and they are now sleeping in a caravan with limited heating, limited electricity and they are coming to us in the square for food because they don't have a penny to rub together.

"So it's a bit of an eye-opener."

A fundraiser launched to pay for supplies including food, clothing and toiletries has raised over £61,000 so far.
