Supervalu has issued an urgent recall notice for two batches of tuna products over fears they could trigger allergy-like symptoms in consumers.
The supermarket has called back the products – Yellowfin Tuna Steaks from its Signature Taste range – after discovering the unusually high levels of histamines.
In some people, elevated levels of histamine can cause symptoms that resemble an allergic reaction.
The products, whose country of origin are unknown, are popular with fish-lovers on Supervalu's shelves.
Their use-by dates are February 16 and 17, according to the recall notice.
But as a result of the histamine problem, point-of-sale recall notices will now be displayed in stores where affected batches are being sold.
The move is being taken as a precautionary measure, the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) said in a statement.
