Supervalu's Covid-themed Christmas ad draws massive public response in Ireland

It's official: the country has gone into overdrive – and it's not over a Government announcement or a Covid-19 update.

No, it's a good news story that Ireland has gone crazy for, with a massive response across the country to a Christmas advert from supermarket giant Supervalu.

There's hardly a dry eye in the country this morning as Supervalu's festive advert – a heartwarming depiction of a Covid-19 Christmas – spreads like wildfire.

The ad, which focuses on a young boy named Conor as he hopes for a special Christmas visitor (his granddad), has been hailed by many as Ireland's answer to the legendary John Lewis Christmas message.

It's the perfect ad for our times, leaving many reaching for the tissues with its emphasis on the importance of family around the festive period – a sentiment many are acutely familiar with ahead of an unprecedented Christmas.

Conor, the young boy who stars in the ad, has become an overnight sensation – with a depiction of childhood innocence that many of us can relate to.

And the ad's ending – "We believe", says Supervalu, after Conor's granddad does indeed show up for Christmas – has warmed hearts everywhere, touching on a theme that's more important than ever at the end of a long and difficult 2020.

Ryan Tubridy paid tribute to the "magic" of the ad this morning on radio, and he's not its only high-profile advocate.

Hazel Chu, the Lord Mayor of Dublin, tweeted: "Ah jaysus. Supervalu (or whatever Ad agency you use) what have you done to me."

Another fan wrote: "I’m here to join the online support group for people who can’t stop bawling over the SuperValu Christmas ad."

And a third added: "I have never exploded into tears like I did 10 minutes ago after watching the SuperValu Christmas ad. My heartstrings, have well and truly been tugged."
