Superquinn founder and former Senator Feargal Quinn dies aged 82

Superquinn founder and former Senator Feargal Quinn has died aged 82.

His family confirmed his death after a short illness and said that he had passed away peacefully at his home in Howth.

Best known for founding the Superquinn grocery chain, he became a Senator in 1993 until his retirement in 2016.

In 2005 the Quinn family sold their interest in Superquinn to the Musgraves family's Supervalu chain of stores.

Superquinn was famed over the years for their quality of customer service and introduced Ireland's first loyalty card scheme, dubbed SuperClub.

Mr Quinn was born in Dublin in 1936 and was a graduate of University College Dublin.

His book "Crowning The Customer", published in 1990, has been translated to multiple languages and continues to be cited worldwide.

He is survived by his wife Denise, their five children and 19 grandchildren.
