Supermoon set to be visible above Ayrshire skies later tonight

A supermoon is set to be visible in Ayrshire skies later tonight – and it's your last chance to see one in 2020.

The Super Flower Moon will appear when the moon is located on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun, meaning its face will be fully illuminated.

It’s also a supermoon, as the moon will be at its closest point to Earth.

This means the moon will look particularly large and bright this evening.

This particular moon was known by early Native American tribes as the Flower Moon.

Typically, the weather has produced clear skies all week but in Ayrshire today, it's a little overcast.

Providing the weather doesn't spoil the party, the supermoon should be visible just after sunset this evening.

But where does this moon get its name from?

NASA explained: “Going by the seasons, as the second full Moon of spring, the Native American tribes of the northeastern United States called this the Flower Moon, as flowers are abundant this time of year in most of these areas.

“Other names include the Corn Planting Moon or the Milk Moon.”
