Supermoon July 2022: Clear skies forecast as moon to be at closest point this year

Talk of a supermoon has got scientists, amateur astronomers, photographers... in fact anyone with a vague interest in the sky above us, excited. While there have already been some beautiful sunsets and night skies this week, it is now the moon that will quite literally be taking centre stage.

The best time to see July's Supermoon, according to skyatnightmagazine, is on the evening of Wednesday, July 13, 2022. It will be the point at which the Moon's orbit will bring it closest to the earth.

For those stargazers on the lookout for the supermoon tonight... well it won't be hard to spot. The Met Office is forecasting a clear night for the region as a whole. The weather experts say conditions in the East Midlands for this evening and overnight will provide "clear spells for most and just the odd isolated light shower possible for western hills." It adds that the minimum temperature for the area will be 13C.

However, while tonight's moon is set to be the biggest and brightest supermoon of the year, that's not to stay we haven't already been treated to some stunning images of the night sky. In June, stargazers saw the Strawberry Moon - it was the second supermoon of the year, and just last night the moon looked amazing.

Taking pictures in the early hours of Wednesday morning, Francesca Hyde from Wollaton, took two stunning shots - both of which are shown here, above as the main image and below.

This month's full moon is known as the Buck Moon. According to The Old Farmer's Almanac, the Buck Moon in July will orbit closer to Earth than any other this year, and will be the biggest and brightest we will see in 2022.

The Old Farmer's Almanac said its names for full moons came from a variety of places and July's is called the Buck Moon because that's when the antlers of male deer - bucks - are in full growth. Bucks shed and regrow their antlers every year and they get bigger as they go. There are some alternative names for July's moon, including Feather Mounting Moon and Salmon Moon.
