As our isolated, stripped-down, stretch-pant quarantines continue, there's something unexpectedly satisfying about an audio deep-dive into our sexier, glossier past.
The new Conde Nast podcast "In Vogue: The 1990s" chooses an unlikely decade but quickly makes the case for its cultural import. Vogue gadfly and host Hamish Bowles kicks it off (editor Anna Wintour makes a purely courtesy appearance) with an electrifying moment: the March 7, 1991, Gianni Versace fashion show in Milan where Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford linked arms and strutted down the runway lip-syncing George Michael's hit anthem "Freedom! '90," for which they had all appeared in the now-iconic music video directed by David Fincher.
That first episode, "The Rise of the Supermodel," leads us to "Grunge Strikes Back" and ultimately to Texas' most stylish import: Tom Ford. In the program, Ford, who was born in Austin, recounts how he failed at multiple vocations before bluffing his way into the fashion industry. He ultimately redefined the Italian luxury powerhouse Gucci — including the pearl-clutching moment he sent male and female models down the catwalk wearing "G"-string thongs.
