Supermarkets warn of Christmas pudding and mince pie supply issues amid dried fruit shortage

If you're a lover of mince pies at Christmas - you may want to look away now.

Why? Well there are reports that these sweet pastries may not make it to the dinner table due to a shortage of dried fruit - and foil tins.

The lack of ingredients to make the sweet treat will no doubt cause disappointment to those who look forward to munching them over the festive period.

For those unaware, a mince pie is a sweet pie of English origin, filled with a mixture of dried fruits (such as raisins, currants and sultanas) and spices called "mincemeat" that is traditionally served during the Christmas season.

And if you also love Christmas pudding, there is more bad news as these could also be affected.

They are the latest products to fall victim to the nationwide HGV driver shortage and supply chain crisis.

Food sales analyst Mintec said the shortfall – caused by a lack of lorry drivers – could also force up prices on the shelves.

It said: "UK buyers in the nuts and dried fruit sector are... experiencing similar issues facing other sectors. Supplies are delayed at UK ports or buyers’ warehouses amid the lack of road transport capacity."

The British Pie Association urged pie makers to tackle the problem by re-using the cases rather than throwing them away.
