Supermarkets & shops closed on Boxing Day 2020 including Aldi, M&S, Home Bargains, Asda, John Lewis

Boxing Day is here but while many retailers will launch their traditional December 26 in-store sales, other retailers have decided to stay closed for one more day.

It's not the first time some shops have closed on Boxing Day, with Aldi and John Lewis having remained shut in recent years to give staff extra time off.

But this year, there seems to be more retailers who have taken the decision, with some saying they wanted to reward staff for their efforts during the pandemic.

Last month, M&S confirmed it would close all its stores on Boxing Day for the first time, having originally planned to open around 200 stores.

Announcing the u-turn, Steve Rowe, chief executive, said at the time: “Throughout the pandemic, our colleagues have gone above and beyond to deliver for our customers and as we enter the busy festive season they are doubling down on their efforts once again to help our customers deliver the Christmas magic for their families and friends."

These stores will all remain closed today, before reopening tomorrow with Sunday trading hours.
