Supermarkets including Asda, Aldi and Morrisons lift some restrictions on items

With shelves at some supermarkets starting to fill up again, several chains are easing restrictions on a selection of products which were introduced in a bid to stop shoppers from stockpiling.

Major stores had previously implemented social distancing measures and hired more staff to cope with the increasing demand from the public in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.

Which is why stock levels have been returning to normal, encouraging a number of supermarkets to relax their restrictions on items.

Aldi has scrapped limits on all but a few products. Customers will only be limited to four items on hand wash, soap, toilet roll, certain tinned goods and alcohol.

The supermarket's limit of two will still remain on antibacterial hand gel, UHT milk and baby formula.

Morrisons has removed restrictions on some items, including frozen fish, and is upping the limits on others from three to four per customer to make it easier for people to donate to food banks.

Waitrose is removing limits on fresh meat, fish, poultry, fruit and vegetables but there are still restrictions on certain items.

Asda has decided to lift restrictions on fruit, vegetables and chilled products.

Other supermarkets like Tesco and Sainsbury's are yet to announce any changes to their policies.

All the major chains had recently imposed limits on the amounts shoppers could buy of individual items as a result of panic buying at the start of March.

Meanwhile, supermarkets have had the biggest monthly takings ever due to a huge coronavirus sales spike.

Sales soared by 20.6% compared with the same time last year, making the past four weeks even more lucrative than Christmas.
