Supermarket syndicate's huge Lottery win

Asda workers from Hyde, Greater Manchester who won £6,873,588 on the National Lottery in their staff syndicate

A group of workers at a supermarket in Greater Manchester were celebrating with champagne after their syndicate won more than £6.8m on the National Lottery.

It means the 16 members of staff at Asda in Hyde, Greater Mancheser, who mostly work on the checkouts, have a large boost to their salaries.

But as they celebrated by drinking champagne, most of the syndicate said they would stay on at the Greenfield Street store despite the win.

Syndicate leader Debra Wilson said they realised they had won Saturday's Rollover Jackpot at work on Monday morning.

She said: "There were hugs and kisses all round. It was brilliant. The managers all came down to say well done and the store manager even gave me a hug.

"It is a great place to work and I think most of us will stay on - we have such a good time and are all good friends."

Wilson formed the syndicate in January 2010, and has been making sure their numbers were in the draw twice a week since then.

She said: "We have had a few wins so far and had won about £300 this year, which is great, but this is unbelievable."

The syndicate stayed with the same numbers chosen by Lucky Dip tickets on the first ever draw they played. Debra made a card with all the lines on for each syndicate member but admitted everyone checked them.

She said: "It was Monday morning and one of the girls called and said we had won. I thought it was a wind-up and searched out the actual ticket to check them. I looked at the television and then called Camelot." News spread among the store about their win after Camelot confirmed it.
