Supermarket submits proposals to extend store in town centre

A supermarket has submitted plans to extend its store in Motherwell town centre.

Aldi opened its doors in the town back in 2013 but has submitted new proposals to North Lanarkshire Council’s planning department extend its property in Mason Street.

In its planning statement, submitted to the council by agents Avison Young, the company stated there was a need to modernise the store in line with others across the country.

The proposals seek to increase the floorspace by 484sqm by extending the building to the north west, south east and south west alongside a number of other small changes.

In its planning statement, Aldi say: “The resultant changes to the store layout inside the building will improve the shopping experience for customers and staff such as the addition of the new shelving and chillers, toilets, staff accommodation, new entrance and exits as well as an improved number of products for sale.

“Some changes to the parking layout are proposed including the installation of electric vehicle charging points, increasing car parking provision by one space and cycle provision from eight to 10 spaces.”

Aldi stated that the proposals will deliver additional economic benefits in addition to the 30 jobs already supported at the store.

The planning statement’s conclusion states: “Aldi is already well established at Mason Street and intends to make further investment at this location.

“The proposals represent a commitment to improve the retail facilities for both customers and staff, improve the operational efficiency and sustainability of the existing store, invest in the local economy and consolidate their business in Motherwell.

“The proposals are appropriate in respect of their modest scale, retail use and design for the local area and will contribute positively to it.”
