On Monday night Prime Minister Boris Johnson put the UK on lockdown, telling everyone to stay home and warning police will have the power to enforce this rule.

All shops, except food shops and pharmacies, will be shut down and people are only allowed to leave the house for a limited number of reasons.

This includes buying essential food and medicine - but Mr Johnson said people should book home delivery of food.

Immediately after the speech at 8.30pm supermarket websites appeared to collapse.

The Asda site's home delivery section was giving an error screen, as was Tesco and Sainsbury's

Morrison's appeared to have no delivery slots left available.

The strict new rules, which will also see parks closed and people banned from meeting friends and family with whom they do not live, as well as libraries and other community facilities shut down, are aimed at curbing the spread of Covid-19.

People are allow to leave the house once a day for exercise.

All social gatherings, any gathering of more than two people, can be dispersed and all social events are banned - including weddings and baptisms.

Places of worship will be closed.
