Supermarket shopper horrified after capturing video of two huge rats scurrying over pastries

People "couldn't believe their eyes" after two massive rats were filmed running through some fresh food in a supermarket.

Footage posted on social media on Sunday captured the rodents scurrying through fresh pastries in the shop.

The scene was caught on video by filmmaker Anthony Mitson, who posted the video on his Instagram stories before it was reposted on Twitter by another user.

The pests were filmed in a Sainsbury's store in the UK, with many people trying to identify its exact location.

Commenting on the now viral clip, one person said: "Nooooooo. See, that’s why I can’t eat from those open bakery things. That’s gross."

A second said: "This video is a perfect example of why supermarkets need to stop selling pastry out in the open like this. It's not just the rats it's the flies too."

A third person wrote: "Simple do not buy open food products from any bakery in a supermarket they are all the same. It’s either gonna b rats /mice/ flies or dirty ppl touching them up."

Another said: "I can’t believe what my eyes are seeing."

While someone else added: "Thank God this wasn’t Lidl bakery. My heart would’ve shattered."

The supermarket chain said they were "immediately investigating with the store". (anthonymitson/Instagram)

Mr Mitson subsequently posted another video a day later showing a sign outside the supermarket telling customers the shop is closed.

The sign reads: "This store is closed at the moment. Sorry for the inconvenience."

A Sainsbury's spokesperson told the Mirror: "We are immediately investigating with the store."
