Supermarket replaces unavailable coffee with something quite unexpected in baffling online order change

A supermarket chain has admitted it made a mess of an online shopping order when it needed to replace on out-of-stock item.

Red-faced Tesco chiefs apologised to mum Claire Hopkins after substituting the unavailable item with something not even closely related.

Mum Claire Hopkins made the order, which included some decaf coffee for residents at the supported lodgings in Gloucester, where she is a manager.

But when Tesco didn't have what she ordered it was changed - and it left her stunned.

Unfortunately for Claire and her residents it wasn't coffee, or even anything they were able to drink,  Gloucestershire Live reports.

Instead Tesco sent a packet of the brand's luxury soft shea butter toilet roll.

Claire said: "It was so weird - usually when they're doing a substitute they will swap for something fairly similar, but I did not expect that!"

"But I did not expect that!"

She says that in hindsight, the driver who dropped off the delivery "seemed in a hurry to get away."

She continued: "It's pretty ridiculous really to make that big a mistake."

Claire says that she informed Tesco of the foul-up over Twitter and was told that they would "look into it" but received no further reply.

She added: "There was no effort to placate me or send us what we actually ordered. To be honest, I would be happy with some Krispy Kremes as compensation!"

A spokesperson for Tesco said: "Clearly it was just a mistake."
