Supermarket regains 'cheapest' crown after dropping price of two shopping staples

Budget supermarket Lidl has regained its position as the cheapest for a basket of essentials.

With families struggling to make ends meet amid rising bills, we've been tracking the prices of the same eight essentials at all the main supermarkets since March.

We reported last week how the cost of the shopping basket had reached a new high, with the bill at each one - Aldi, Lidl, Morrisons, Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury's - topping £11 for the first time.

Lidl had been the cheapest for the products since as far back as June, but earlier this month was pipped to the top spot by Aldi after it made three price rises in a week.

But this week, Lidl has reduced two of its products, including bringing its butter back down from £2.15 to £1.99 block, a move which has seen it regain its position as the cheapest.

It has also brought its total for the shop back under £11, at £10.92 to be precise.

That's for a two-pint bottle of milk, a loaf of bread, coffee, teabags, butter, beans, chicken breasts and mince.

Aldi isn't far behind at £11.01 and Tesco and Sainsbury's, which have both put the price of two pints of milk up from £1.25 to £1.30 this week, are almost identical, at £11.30 and £11.31 respectively.

Asda is ranking fifth, with a bill of £11.38, and Morrisons remains the most expensive at £11.55.
