Supermarket petrol prices cut as Morrisons, Asda and Tesco announce fuel drop

Supermarkets Asda, Tesco and Morrisons have cut petrol prices to less than £1 per litre.

Morrisons cut fuel prices to less than £1 per litre nationwide on May 11.

The store said it wanted to help families with the cost of motoring as certain sectors and some people go back to work.

The supermarket reduced its fuel prices to a maximum of 99.7p per litre at its UK forecourts, and said it was the first time petrol had been sold nationally for under £1 since February 2016.

Head of Fuel for Morrisons, Ashley Myers, said: "This cut will help people who are travelling to work, those shopping for essentials, and those assisting the elderly and vulnerable.

"We want to play our full part in reducing the cost of living and feeding the nation at this difficult time."

Tesco then followed suit, announcing today petrol will be no more than 99.9p per litre while diesel will not be above 105.9p per litre, reports Liverpool Echo.

And according to the Guardian, Asda has cut its prices to the same level, saying it wanted to "support the nation during these unprecedented times".

Government figures show the average cost per litre and petrol and diesel on May 4 was 107.6p and 114.9p respectively.

The price collapse means filling a 55-litre family car is around £7 cheaper than seven weeks ago.

For a typical 50-litre fill up, Morrisons said a motorist would save £4.50 following its price cut.
