The Supermarket of the Year 2021 has been announced - with Morrisons being granted the title.
It was named ‘Supermarket Of The Year’ at the Retail Industry Awards 2021.
The grocer was praised by the judging panel for several aspects, including the food boxes it launched during the pandemic.
The judging panel said: “It did a lot of creative stuff around the pandemic, including food boxes and telephone ordering for vulnerable people.
“It pushed ahead with things like store openings and its Market Kitchen initiative – which is a really excellent foodservice concept that can be used as a footfall-driver for its stores," the Liverpool Echo reports.
The panel also recognised Morrisons’ commitment to initiatives such its deal to supply Amazon Fresh stores.
They also drew attention to the retailer's Market Kitchen format - which offers customers the opportunity to have their breakfast, lunch or evening meal freshly made-to-order by a chef, at the same time as getting their groceries.
According to the panel: “Everyone should be applauded for their efforts during the year, but for me Morrisons was the stand-out.”
Claire Grainger, group people director, added: “On behalf of our Executive team, I wanted to say congratulations, and more importantly a huge thank you to every single one of our 106,246 foodmakers and shopkeepers.
“This award recognises the incredible contribution they have all made during a truly unprecedented and challenging period for the whole nation and our Company.
