Irish jobs: Supermarket giant Tesco hiring 1,150 new workers across Ireland in the lead up to Christmas

Retail giant Tesco is to hire more than 1,000 new staff.

Up to 1,150 positions to support business operations will be created in the run-up to Christmas.

Of these roles, 450 are full-time permanent jobs throughout the country with 120 in Cork.

The retailer is creating 700 temporary roles to assist with a safe and easy shopping trip during the Christmas trading period.

Taoiseach Micheal Martin said: “Tesco’s latest recruitment drive provides much-needed good news in challenging times.

“I would like to thank Tesco staff and all other retail workers who have kept our shops open during the Covid-19 pandemic. They are playing a vital role in ensuring people have access to essential supplies in a safe environment.

“These additional jobs will further improve the shopping experience for customers as well as providing an employment boost in Cork and right across the country.”

Tesco Ireland chief executive Kari Daniels added: “Since the start of this pandemic, our colleagues have risen to the challenge to continue to serve our customers and communities.

“We are pleased to be able to add these roles at this challenging time.

“We look forward to welcoming these new team members who will enjoy good careers in a dynamic retail industry.”

Tesco has 151 stores nationwide and it employs more than 13,000 people around Ireland, supporting 47,000 jobs directly and indirectly.

It works with around 480 Irish suppliers, ranging from larger, established food businesses to small and medium enterprises, which in turn supports more than 13,000 farming families around Ireland.

It has also been leading the market for terms and conditions in its sector as well as being awarded Great Place To Work status by staff.

The new roles will be spread across areas including assembly and fulfilment of customer orders for online order, delivery drivers, customer assistants, plus a variety of other positions.

Additional hours are also being shared among long-standing staff to help the handling of Covid-19 and Christmas trading.

Recruitment for the new roles has already begun and applicants can apply at Tesco.ie/careers.
