Supermarket giant Sainsbury’s confirm axing East Kilbride town centre store

Staff at Sainsbury’s Olympia have been dealt a hammer blow with the announcement that the shop is being axed.

The retail giant confirmed to the East Kilbride News   today it is one of up to 15 supermarkets which will go.

Workers faced an anxious wait when the company announced last year that they intended to close stores, with the town centre shop due to shut its doors in January.

The firm have not confirmed how many jobs will go.

But the store closures announced a year ago will take place over the next two years.

They say work is ongoing to relocate staff to alternative stores - including the superstore at Kingsgate Retail Park.

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said, “We have updated colleagues on the difficult decision to close our Olympia store and we are doing everything we can to find alternative roles within Sainsbury’s for those affected.

“Customers can continue to shop with us at our East Kilbride superstore.”

The announcement is also a blow to the town centre which has seen a number of high-profile closures in recent months.

Town Centre management say they are working on a response to the announcement.

However, a source told the News  the plans may not be as 'straight forward' as first thought.
