Supermarket giant Lidl looking to expand in Dumfries and Galloway

A supermarket firm is looking to expand in Dumfries and Galloway.

German chain Lidl is looking for sites in Dumfries and Castle Douglas.

Both towns are included in its annual list of areas where it is looking for new stores as it bids to have 1,000 outlets across Britain by the end of 2023.

The firm already has one store in Dumfries on Brooms Road, which is the only one of its shops in the region.

It currently has more than 100 outlets across Scotland.

As well as a list of places ideal for expansion, Lidl has also released a brochure containing details of what it would like from potential sites, including strong pedestrian or traffic flow and at least 100 car parking spaces.

An existing unit would be between 18,000 and 26,500 sq foot, while an empty site would be at least 1.5 acres for a standalone store or up to four acres for mixed-use.

The brochure also says new stores would also take part in Lidl’s Feed It Back scheme, with surplus food donated to people in need in the local community.

Lidl’s regional director for Scotland, Ross Millar, said: “We want to continue to reach more shoppers across Scotland and our site requirements brochure is a testament of that.

“There are towns that will be new for Lidl and in some places, the potential to even double our sites.”

Lidl is not the only firm eyeing up a move into Castle Douglas.

The town has been on Aldi’s list of “required locations” on its website since last year.

However, last month the firm released a list of 20 locations in Scotland it was looking to expand into which did not include anywhere in Dumfries and Galloway.
