Supermarket giant Lidl announces plans for new Stoke-on-Trent store

Discount supermarket Lidl wants to build a new store in Stoke-on-Trent.

The retailer has lodged proposals to transform a vacant site on the corner of Scotia Road and Federation Road in Burslem.

The new 1,256 square-metre store will create up to 40 new jobs and will boast an in-store bakery and 115 car parking spaces.

Almost 200 residents living close to the site have been consulted about the plans - and 164 of them are in favour of the new supermarket.

A planning application to Stoke-on-Trent City Council states: "Lidl is committed to delivering a high-quality development which will meet local convenience needs, generate employment opportunities and deliver other local economic and investment benefits.

"This will see the redevelopment of a site which has been vacant for 10 years.

"The company's philosophy is all about simplicity - offering customers everyday quality at the best possible prices. Its approach to new stores is equally straightforward and eminently sensible. This is to provide small/modest stores serving local needs in convenient locations with ‘deeply discounted’ prices and a limited range of ‘own brand’ goods."

A decision on the plans is expected within weeks.
