Morrisons supermarket in Perth has been given permission to open 24 hours.
Councillors were asked to consider the request at a meeting of Perth and Kinross Council’s licensing committee on Thursday, November 19.

The supermarket on Caledonian Road made the request to allow shoppers more “flexibility” during the pandemic.
A representative for Morrisons told councillors: “The coronavirus crisis has changed many shopping habits.

“Routines have changed and, as we move in and out of lockdown, Morrisons was keen to protect its customers and launched a Feed the Nation campaign.”
He said that since then the supermarket had been contacting all Scotland’s licensing committees and boards to ensure customers have access to all their essential groceries.

Morrions claims being able to open through the night will allow “flexibility” for shoppers to get their groceries safely.
The representative said there were no plans to open the cafe or offer hot food takeaways late at night. Alcohol cannot be bought from 10pm to 10am in line with Scottish licensing law.

The Morrisons application is a “variation across the board” with the representative saying it would be brought in as and when there was customer demand for the extended opening hours.
He suggested “congested periods such as the week leading up to Christmas could be made safe” with shoppers being given the option to shop through the night.

Perth and Kinross councillors unanimously approved the move.
A spokesperson for Morrisons told the Perthshire Advertiser they could not confirm any details yet but will announce when it plans to extend the Perth store’s opening hours in due course.
