Supermarket giant Aldi gets go-ahead for Cumnock

A new Aldi store has been granted planning permission in Cumnock.

The German supermarket plans to build a new shop at the Thistle Business Park on Ayr Road.

Councillors gave the grocery chain the go-ahead at a planning committee meeting on Friday.

Planning committee chair councillor Jim Roberts, SNP, said: “We looked at the impact on Cumnock town centre and the benefits of a £4 million investment. A lot of people shop in Aldi. It will keep spend in the south of the area rather than spend going to Aldi in Ayr or Kilmarnock.

The Ballochmyle politician added: “There was a lengthy discussion process.”

The bid was 'significantly contrary' to the council’s East Ayrshire Local Development Plan but politicians unanimously approved it.

Aldi said in a design and access statement: “We consider that a fresh, contemporary food store will provide the area with an improved choice for shopping, which complements existing facilities in the local area, with the potential to bolster trade as well as create local jobs.”

Four objections were lodged in total.

Asda, which is based in Townhead Street, was one of the objectors.

A concern was raised about traffic congestion causing  queues at the Barony Campus school entrance.
Another fear was traffic at a busy mini roundabout to the east of the site would worsen.

An objection lodged on behalf of Asda said: “Asda considers that this application is significantly contrary to policy based on the business and industry safeguarding allocation.”

Two supporting  letters were also submitted - with one saying Aldi would help residents cut their carbon footprint as they won’t have to travel to Ayr or Kilmarnock.

Officers recommended approval as long as a number of conditions are met.

A planning committee report said: “The proposed development will likely be a catalyst to bring the wider community into the Cumnock town centre, thus supporting the local economy and the wider retail offer, as  opposed  to  significantly  adversely  impacting  it.

"The impact of the trips out of Cumnock to shop in Ayr may also be reduced by the proposal."
