Supermarket fuel price war sees up to 10p-a-litre off ahead of the bank holiday

You might want to change your regular supermarket this week, after Sainsbury's and Morrisons both released new offers.

Morrisons has said it will knock 5p-a-litre off the price of filling up at its supermarkets for people who spend £40 in store at the supermarket.

But Sainsbury's went further - offering shoppers online and in store 10p a litre off their petrol and diesel as long as they bought a basket of goods worth £60 or more.

Morrisons head of fuel Ashley Myers said: "Many customers are driving during the Bank Holiday weekend and we want to help them save when they fill up."

Sainsbury’s fuel buying manager David Pegg said: “We hope this offer will help put money back in customers’ pockets as we head into May and start gearing up for the summer.”

The small print

Morrisons said its deal is only available to customers in store, and the £40 purchase needs to happen before the end of May 6.

Once you have a voucher it's valid until May 12.

To qualify for the 10p-a-litre discount at Sainsbury’s you need to spend £60 or more on groceries (so spirits, tobacco, gifts cards are excluded) in a single transaction between May 1 and 7. However, purchases at Sainsbury centrals and locals don't qualify.

Its deal also works for online purchases to be delivered by May 7.

Qualifying customers will receive a coupon at the checkout or when they receive their online groceries.

You need to redeem your coupon within 14 days of making your purchase to get the 10p-a-litre off and it's good for purchases of up to 100 litres of fuel.

As an added extra, customers can also collect Nectar points when they fill up with one point for each litre purchased.

Sadly, they can't be used for Pay@Pump transactions, or on more than one car at a time.
