Supermarket chain Aldi submits plans for new store in West Lothian

Supermarket chain Aldi has submitted a planning application for a new store in Broxburn.

The discount food retailer has lodged the application with West Lothian Council for a new shop at Greendykes Industrial Estate in Broxburn.

And if given the green light, 35 new jobs will be created.

The submission comes after a successful online consultation event to inform local residents and receive feedback on the proposals.

The online consultation event was held on June 10 and the retailer wrote to over 2,000 local residents to inform them of the development. The company received over 250 responses of which 95 per cent were in support of the plans.

The proposed store will deliver a 1,315 Sqm food store with 107 parking bays.

It said the new store points to continued investment within West Lothian bringing their total number of supermarkets in the area from five to six.

Aldi currently has stores in Livingston, Bathgate, Whitburn and Linlithgow, with a second store in Livingston due to open later this year.

The development at Broxburn will create up to 35 local jobs within the store, together with new jobs during construction and within the Aldi supply chain. A

The company also recently opened a £25m state-of-the-art storage and chill unit in Bathgate that will create another 120 jobs over the next five years.

Philip Johnston, property director for Scotland, Aldi, said: “We are delighted to announce we have submitted our planning application for a new store following the overwhelmingly positive feedback we’ve received from local residents in Broxburn and the surrounding villages. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who took the time to take part in our Online Consultation and those that have written back to us with their feedback.

“The proposed new store marks an exciting time as we bring forward plans for a sixth store in West Lothian. West Lothian is a key area of growth for Aldi and I am delighted to be able to present our plans to the local community and bring our award-winning offer to Broxburn and the surrounding villages.

“It is clear that there is an under provision of a discount supermarket offering in Broxburn and the surrounding area and we are confident that the addition of a new Aldi store will help to address this.

“The store will help rejuvenate a former industrial site and create a number of full and part-time job opportunities within the town.

“We will continue to engage with and update the local community as we progress our plans.”

Following the Online Consultation, and submission of the planning application for a new store this month, it is anticipated that the new store will open and welcome shoppers in Spring 2022.
