Supermarket bans bottled water from home deliveries

Online supermarket Ocado has banned bottle water from its deliveries.

Ocado has struggled to keep up with demand for home deliveries in recent days and at one point closed down its website as it became overwhelmed. The supermarket says it was experiencing the equivalent of everybody at Glastonbury trying to shop in a local shop every hour as people scrambled to book online delivery slots.

It has now moved to ban one particular heavy and bulky item from home deliveries in order to free up space in vans and deliver to up to 6,000 extra homes every week.

From today bottled water will not be included in Ocado deliveries, it has confirmed.

A statement from Ocado said: "This small step frees up extra space in our vans, and allows us to deliver to 6,000 extra homes a week. So, just for a few weeks, we’re asking you to sacrifice your favourite mineral water and turn back to the old-reliable tap, we’re sure you’ll agree it’s worth it."

Ocado is releasing new delivery slots every day. It says: "Once we can confirm the availability of personal shoppers and drivers, we will release new delivery slots. These new slots will be released every day for the coming week, as and when we have capacity."

It follows extreme demand for supermarket delivery slots amid the coronavirus outbreak. As more people self isolate and stay at home, more people are trying to book essential groceries as a delivery to avoid supermarkets.
