Supermarket aims to turn Lanarkshire yellow with free sunflower seeds

Morrisons' Hamilton store are giving away free sunflower seeds in an effort to spread hope and lift the spirits of the town.

Checkout colleagues within the supermarket chain are offering the seeds free to customers in packs of 10 after they have finished their shopping and including them within Morrisons online shopping orders.

The aim of the 'Seeds of Hope' campaign is to encourage people of Lanarkshire, of all ages, to join in on planting the sunflowers in a bid to turn towns yellow.

The stores community champion, Kimberly Cairns, told Lanarkshire Live : "We simply want to brighten up our local environment in time for everyone being able to venture outside once again with friends this summer.

"Myself and my fellow community champion, Shell Foley, have joined forces with local charity Supporting Our Community (SOC) and the Hillhouse Resident's and Tenants Association to provide children with their own seeds, pots and compost.

"And we are taking our time having fun with locals planting the seeds and distributing them to other groups and schools across Hamilton and Blantyre."

As part of this campaign, each store has also been asked to nominate a 'little sunshine' - a young person who has made a difference during lockdown.

And Morrisons Hamilton nominated St Mary's Primary School pupil Jayden McNamara, who received huge praise from First Minister Nicola Sturgeon for his humorous but poignant poem about covid-19 earlier this year.

Community champion Shell Folley added: "Jayden's poem reached far and wide, with even Nicola Sturgeon commenting her congratulations online so it was only fair that Morrisons nominated Jayden for his seeds of hope!

"Running alongside this we have our messages of hope, where we are asking children from local nurseries, schools and high schools to colour in postcards, delivered by us and write a little message of their choosing on the back.

"These post cards will then be collected, quarantined and passed onto local care homes, or elderly/vulnerable people to try and enable to cheer them up and keep connections within the community.

"All we ask is that any postcard requests are made on our Facebook page Morrisons Hamilton in the Community and we will deliver them to you."
