Margot Kidder, who was most famous for playing Lois Lane in "Superman," died by suicide, her daughter confirmed Wednesday.
Kidder, 69, was found dead in her home on May 13 "as a result of a self-inflicted drug and alcohol overdose," according to Park County coroner Richard Wood.
The actress' daughter, Maggie McGuane, said she'd known about her mother since she found out about the death.
"It's a big relief that the truth is out there," she said. "It's important to be open and honest so there's not a cloud of shame in dealing with this."
A longtime mental health advocate, Kidder was open about her bipolar disorder, including during a public nervous breakdown in 1996.
Kidder, best known for starring alongside Christopher Reeve in four "Superman" movies between 1978 and 1987, also had roles in "The Amityville Horror," "Sisters," "Quackser Fortune Has a Cousin in the Bronx" and "The Great Waldo Pepper."
