Fans are desperate to know what happens in 'Superman's' post-credits scene ahead of the movie's release, but early screenings have revealed that the scene isn't one fans may be expecting.
The new era of the DCU begins on 11 July when Superman returns with his own solo film for the first time since 'Man of Steel' was released 11 years ago.
The reboot stars a fresh cast, including newcomer David Corenswet in the lead role and Marvel director James Gunn at the helm.
It was recently confirmed that 'Superman' has not one but two end-credits scenes. One appears midway through the credits, while the other plays as the credits end.
However, James Gunn said these scenes would be different from those in the 'Guardians of the Galaxy' movies, which he described as a mistake.
Read on for full spoilers about what happens in the end credits scenes and why they aren't what fans may be expecting to see.
Gunn Reveals Why Superman End-Credits Scenes Aren't Future-Facing
Both end-credits scenes in 'Superman' are enjoyable in their own right, but they don't give any teasers about the future of the DCU.
James Gunn, 'Superman's' director/writer and the co-head of DC Studios, said he has 'a philosophy about post-credits scenes.'
'It's somewhat related to my own mistakes in my time with Marvel,' he shared in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
Gunn explained that he doesn't like end credits which act as set-ups for future films.
He said it wasn't easy to work Adam Warlock into 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,' after teasing his character in the post-credits scene of 'Guardians 2.'
'I loved working with Will, and I liked dealing with the character, but at the end of the day, was he kind of fitting a weird square peg into a round hole? A little bit, yeah.'
Gunn said he much preferred the post-credits scene of the first 'Guardians of the Galaxy' since it revealed Howard the Duck in a humorous way but didn't set up any future expectations for the character.
'The way a post-credits scene works is a punch to the face, like, "Oh my God! Look at this." At times when you're using it just solely to set something up, sometimes you're screwing yourself over,' Gunn said.
Needless to say, 'Superman's' end-credits scenes give no hints for future DC films, of which Superman is set to be the first in a whole new era of the DC universe now known as the DCU.
What Happens In Both End-Credits Scenes?
For 'Superman' superfans who just can't wait to see the film in cinemas themselves, here's what happens in both end credits scenes.
The first scene appears mid-credits and is a peaceful moment between Superman and his dog. They are shown sitting on the moon together, overlooking Earth as the sun rises over the planet.
Superman holds Krypto while looking out over the United States, dotted with city lights. Fans of the franchise see the scene as Superman's commitment to protecting not just America, but the whole world, and his view of himself as the world's hero.
The main shot featured in the scene has been used for the film's promotional material and can be seen in the 'Strength' trailer released several weeks ago.
The second scene is a humorous post-credits interaction between Superman and Mister Terrific. They stand staring at a huge crack in a building caused by the earth splitting in half during the film's final battle.
Superman points out that the building is a little crooked to which Mister Terrific gets mad.
'What do you want me to do? Do you want me to take it apart and put it back together?' he asks before storming off. Superman calls out after him to apologise, but Mister Terrific only kicks a rock and keeps walking.
'Darn it, I can be such a jerk sometimes,' Superman says to himself before the screen cuts to black.
