A part of me still can’t believe we’re in a world where DC and Marvel are making new crossover comics. The mere idea of that would have seemed impossible a year ago, after decades of the two being on opposite islands of the publishing industry.
And yet, I have a physical copy of Marvel’s Deadpool/Batman #1 already on my spinner rack, and am counting down the days until DC’s side of the crossover, Batman/Deadpool #1. When those two one-shots were formally announced earlier this year, the publishers hinted that they would be the first of several… and now, we have a bit more insight into what that might entail.
On Thursday, DC and Marvel formally announced that their next two crossover one-shots, which will launch in 2026, will be centered around a new meeting between Superman and Spider-Man. This will not only fold in two characters who were (shockingly) absent from the first round of one-shots, but will pay tribute to their initial meeting in the first DC-Marvel crossover, 1976’s Superman vs. The Amazing Spider-Man.
First, the publishers will be joining forces to reprint that initial crossover, in honor of its 50th anniversary next year. Treasury Edition 50th Anniversary of Superman vs. The Amazing Spider-Man #1 will be published by DC on January 7, 2026, and will bring that first story back into print for the first time in decades. It will be followed by DC and Marvel Present: Superman and Spider-Man Treasury Edition #1 on February 4, 2026, which will reprint the duo’s second meeting in Marvel Treasury Edition #28.
Soon after, the two new one-shots will debut: Superman/Spider-Man #1 from DC in March of 2026, and Spider-Man/Superman #1 in April. Creative teams have not been formally announced at this time, but the publishers promise “promise fresh, original stories that honor the legacy of these cultural icons while charting new ground.”
Man of Steel meets Web Head
Once the details around the current Batman/Deadpool crossover clicked into place, I did wonder how Superman and Spider-Man might be included in the next round. Would Superman be paired with the Fantastic Four, after their new movies both hit the big screen within weeks of each other? Who would be a perfect colleague for Marvel’s current Spider-Man, whose publishing history has had some major ebbs and flows over the past few years?
In hindsight, paying direct homage to the original Superman and Spider-Man crossover is a no-brainer… one that will arguably get even more people’s attention than the concept of Batman putting up with Deadpool’s one-liners. While I have no idea what threat could bring them into each other’s orbit (back in the 70s, it was supervillain team-ups between Lex Luthor and Doc Ock, and later Doctor Doom and Parasite), it will be fun to see them cross paths in a more modern context.
And now that we know these two characters are anchoring the main story, I’m so curious about what we could expect from the backups. Will Supergirl also get a story, ahead of her blockbuster movie in the summer of 2026? Will somebody from Marvel Rivals (beyond Jeff the Land Shark, who just met Krypto in Deadpool/Batman) get the spotlight? Hopefully, we don’t have to wait too long to find out.
